VMWare Machine Setup

November 29, 2005 at 2:37 pm | In Apps | 1 Comment

I’ve found myself setting up VMWare machines on a consistant basis. Here’s how I customize my VMWare boxes, given that I am starting with a clean OS install with all the latest patches.

What I usually do:

  • Set System Name then reboot (to prevent network conflicts)
  • Turn off system restore (that’s what revert is for!)
  • Enable Classic GUI mode (if on an XP machine)
  • Assign IPs (if necessary)
  • Install Ultraedit and latest word file, and uedit.ini
  • Set automatic updates to notify rather than auto download
  • Set recycle bin to 1%
  • Set keyboard repeat rate to fastest setting
  • Create Desktop shortcut to VMWareDND
  • Set Background as an instant visual remidner at to the purpose of the machine
  • Disable IIS’s webserver and FTP Server
  • Disable Built in Firewall

  1. I use a custom desktop appearance that just sets the window titles to green-ish rarher than blue-ish. Similar deal, but since I never see my desktop this works for me.

I also remove the games and other crud, in MS-Windows I use TweakUI and XP-Antispy to disable a bit of other crud which liberate 50MB of disk and make everything run a little faster.
