VMWare Machine Setup
November 29, 2005 at 2:37 pm | In Apps | 1 CommentI’ve found myself setting up VMWare machines on a consistant basis. Here’s how I customize my VMWare boxes, given that I am starting with a clean OS install with all the latest patches.
What I usually do:
- Set System Name then reboot (to prevent network conflicts)
- Turn off system restore (that’s what revert is for!)
- Enable Classic GUI mode (if on an XP machine)
- Assign IPs (if necessary)
- Install Ultraedit and latest word file, and uedit.ini
- Set automatic updates to notify rather than auto download
- Set recycle bin to 1%
- Set keyboard repeat rate to fastest setting
- Create Desktop shortcut to VMWareDND
- Set Background as an instant visual remidner at to the purpose of the machine
- Disable IIS’s webserver and FTP Server
- Disable Built in Firewall

I use a custom desktop appearance that just sets the window titles to green-ish rarher than blue-ish. Similar deal, but since I never see my desktop this works for me.
I also remove the games and other crud, in MS-Windows I use TweakUI and XP-Antispy to disable a bit of other crud which liberate 50MB of disk and make everything run a little faster.
